The edges of Thornface's vision blurred. Her world shrank to confine this one little mouse--the mouse and her pathway to it. She could hear every sound the tiny animal made; the sound of its rapid-beating heart, its whiskers brushing the long blades of grass to the side as it sniffed around for seeds along the forest floor. Thornface gathered her paws beneath her and prepared to leap...
Something brightly colored and buzzing caught her attention just before she leapt. "That's a bee! Nope!"
The she-cat leapt straight up in the air and bolted in the opposite direction, short little tail protected between her hind legs. Somewhere in her mind she knew the bee hadn't followed her. Her mother's voice came forward in her mind:
Don't be afraid of bees! They're just like Clan cats. They find their prey--the pollen-- and they bring it back to the nest--their camp--and they won't bother you unless you bother them.
The memory was blurred, but the voice was clear enough. However despite her mother's words, Thornface couldn't stop running. The feeling that she was prey in the heart of her own territory was overwhelming. Bees weren't even that big, but the terror she experienced whenever she saw one could have outweighed the terror of facing an entire Clan of foxes! She glanced back--where was the bee?
Forget the bee. Something big squawked and exploded into her face--Thornface tumbled right into a flock of blackbirds that had decided to take flight the second she was on top of them. The squawking and the flapping and the feathers that were flying...the she-cat's head pounded. There was so much going on. She swatted at the birds with her paws, hoping to bring at least something back to camp...
